The Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway is only minutes away from downtown Sparta and is one of the most beautiful roads in the United States.  There are gorgeous long range mountain views with spectacular sunrises and sunsets.  The wildlife includes whitetail deer, black bears, wild turkey, raccoons, opossums and coyotes.   There are so many beautiful and unique plants like rhododendron, mountain laurel, Fraser furs and red spruce trees.  Sparta can be accessed from several Blue Ridge Parkway mileposts including Milepost 217.3 (at Hwy 18 North in Ennice, NC ), Milepost 229.7 (at Hwy 21 South in Glade Valley, NC), and Milepost 248.1 (at Hwy 18 South in Laurel Springs, NC).  The Parkway runs for 469 miles, providing plenty of opportunities for experiencing all that makes this region of the country so wonderful.

Historic Hwy 21 Lakes to Florida

Before the completion of Interstate 77, travelers from northern states headed south on Hwy 21 through Sparta on their way to Florida.

There has been a recent campaign to encourage travelers to “Take a Break from the Interstate”.  This effort invites folks to slow down and enjoy the ride. The mileage on the two highways are the same, but the pleasures are miles apart.  Hwy. 21 meanders through the same countryside that awes Parkway travelers. You can leisurely discover small towns that retain their mid-twentieth century charm. Enjoy home cooked hospitality at local restaurants and the Yadkin Valley Wine Country. It's a great opportunity to leave your stress behind and return to a simpler time.
