Meet Anna Balser, the New Principal of Lewisville Elementary School
It's really great to sit down today with Anna Balser. Anna is the new Principal of Lewisville Elementary School. She is a native of Clemmons and has been in this area all of her life. Check out the interview below.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a native of Clemmons and graduate of West Forsyth High School and UNC-Chapel Hill. I currently live in Pfafftown with my husband Doug, who teaches at Reagan High School, two children and three cats.
Where did you earn your teaching certification?
UNC-Chapel Hill
What was it like when you first started?
I started teaching right out of college and at that time email was a new and innovative technology. I did not own a cell phone. Teachers used an overhead projector and there was very little access to technology for students.
What made you decide on going into the Education field?
I have always enjoyed working with children. I was very active in my church youth group and worked with the younger kids. Kids are honest and typically tell it like it is and I love that about them.
Why did you decide to transition to your current position?
I loved being a teacher and I worked with school administrators that recognized that I had talents and strengths to be able to grow other teachers. I transitioned to the role of curriculum coordinator right out of the classroom. From there, I had administrators who allowed me to develop my leadership skills and I transitioned to the role of assistant principal. I am so thankful for those who saw my potential and urged me to go into school administration.
What do you love about being a principal?
I get to work with all areas of a school community. I work with the local community partnerships, district administration, teachers, staff and most importantly, the students and their families.
What has surprised you most about the job?
It’s muti-faceted! There are so many different pieces happening right now. I see it as a puzzle, and you have all the pieces that have to fit together to make it work effectively as a whole. I have learned so much in just the short time I have been here.
What is the most memorable experience you have had at your new school so far?
Today we had a “meet and greet” drive-thru event – Popsicles with the Principal I was able to meet some of my students as they drive through the car line.
What are your favorite things to do in the neighborhood?
I love all of the parks and the plays at Shallowford Square.
How do you motivate and encourage your staff?
I support them and let them know they can make a difference in students’ lives every day. Their work is important.
